Volunteers and Internships

Volunteers and interns at the HRLC have the opportunity to be involved in casework, advocacy, law reform and policy development, legal education and human rights capacity building in each of the HRLC’s thematic priority areas.


What opportunities are available?

Depending on capacity and resources at the time, the HRLC is able to offer the following opportunities:

  • Ongoing volunteering – at least two full days per week
  • Internships – the HRLC is happy to receive applications for full-time and part-time internships for between 1-6 months


Who can apply?

  • Preference is given to individuals who are admitted to practice (or eligible for admission)
  • Preference is also given to post-graduate students
  • We regret that we are not able to offer placements to undergraduate, postgraduate or College of Law students


Selection Criteria

Volunteers and interns at the HRLC will:

  • have a very strong commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights;
  • be available to commit to volunteer at least two days per week;
  • be able to work very effectively in a small, flexible, responsive, dynamic and motivated team;
  • be able to work with a high degree of autonomy and limited supervision;
  • have highly developed interpersonal and communication skills;
  • have excellent legal research, analysis and writing skills; and
  • have the ability to understand new and unfamiliar issues very quickly.

  • A short cover letter outlining:
    • your availability (ie when you might be able to start and which days of the week you are available)
    • particular areas of interest and/or expertise
  • A short resume detailing relevant experience
