Prof Ron McCallum – ‘Dignity, Equality and Inclusion: Engaging with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Committee of Experts’ (28 April 2009)

On 28 April 2009, the Human Rights Law Resource Centre hosted a seminar entitled ‘Dignity, Equality and Inclusion: Engaging with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Committee of Experts’ with Professor Ron McCallum AO, member of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Ron McCallum AO is Professor of Labour Law at Sydney Law School and is an inaugural member of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Committee, which is comprised of 12 independent international human rights and disability experts, is established under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It is responsible for monitoring and promoting implementation of the Convention. Australia became a party to the Convention in July 2008 and Prof McCallum attended the Committee’s 1st Session in Geneva in February 2009.

Prof McCallum has experienced blindness since birth and is Deputy Chair of Vision Australia. He was Dean of Sydney Law School from 2002 to 2007 and the inaugural president of the Australian Labour Law Association.
