Domestic Casework

The Centre conducts and supports human rights casework and litigation before domestic courts and tribunals, including the High Court, Federal Court and state Supreme Courts.

The Centre’s roles in casework and litigation includes acting as instructing solicitor, in co-counsel arrangements, as a third-party intervener or amicus curiae, through the provision of resources and support, and as an applicant or party in its own right.

International Casework

The Centre conducts and supports human rights casework and litigation before international bodies and tribunals, including Special Procedures of the UN Human Rights Council and UN treaty bodies such as the Human Rights Committee and the Committee against Torture.

Impact of the HRLRC

In 2008, an Independent Evaluation of the Centre found that:

  • The Centre has made a significant and positive contribution to the promotion of human rights through its case work, litigation, policy work and educational activities.
  • The Centre’s capacity to proactively and strategically litigate as a method of promoting and protecting human rights is a major distinguishing feature.
