On 10 December 2008, the Commonwealth Attorney-General announced a national public consultation into the need for better human rights protection in Australia. The consultation was an historic opportunity for all Australians to have their say about the protection of human rights.
On 8 October 2009, the Australian Government released the historic report of the National Human Rights Consultation. The Report contained 31 recommendations to improve the promotion and protection of human rights in Australia. On 21 April 2010, the Australian Government released a new ‘Human Rights Framework for Australia’ in response to the report of the National Human Rights Consultation Committee.
